DIY Natural Spring Cleaning Products

I love spring cleaning.

Common cleaning products can contain chemicals that release toxins that can actually make you sick. From coughs to asthma, there are even some cleaning products that contain carcinogens (i.e. cancer-causing chemicals). I’ve begun making my own cleaning supplies. While they aren’t as heavy duty as bleach and hardcore chemicals, they definitely get the job done.

Here are two of my favorite DIY natural cleaning products to make before you start your spring cleaning.

Lavender Lemongrass Linen Spray -- I love keeping this spray on hand year-round. It’s perfect for refreshing bedding, towels and pet areas. Lavender and lemongrass are the ultimate “spa” combination to me.

What is needed:

  • Glass spray bottle

  • 20 drops lavender essential oil

  • 10 drops lemongrass essential oil

  • 2 cups distilled water

  • 2 ounces rubbing alcohol

  1. Mix preferred essential oil blend in a separate bowl with the rubbing alcohol.

  2. Add distilled water to the mixture.

  3. Pour into spray bottle and shake well.

Shake well before each use since there are no bonding chemicals in this mixture. Separation is totally normal.

Naturally Antibacterial Grapefruit All-Purpose Cleaner

This cleaner is amazing for almost every surface in your house (with the exception of marble and granite). Use it on tub, kitchen counters, sinks and any other dirty surfaces.

tub, kitchen counters, sinks and any other dirty surfaces. what you’ll need:

  1. Glass spray bottle

  2. 2 cups distilled water

  3. 2 tablespoons castile soap

  4. 15 drops grapefruit essential oil

  5. 15 drops tea tree essential oil

  6. 5 drops spearmint essential oil

In your spray bottle, add the castile soap and essential oils and give it a good swirl.

  1. Top off with distilled water

  2. Shake to combine

Just FYI * Distilled water lengthens the shelf life of your homemade cleaners. I prefer castile soap to other kinds of soap because it’s vegetable-based and extremely concentrated, so a little goes a long way. But in a pinch, you can also use some natural dish soap.
